Wireless Technology and Visible Light
At Boston University's College of Engineering researchers are working to develop the next generation of wireless communications technology based on visible light. The research initiative, known as the Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center, is part of an $18.5m, multi-year National Science Foundation programme.
A vast network of light-based communication is possible with widespread LED lighting. A wireless device within sight of an enabled LED could send and receive data though the air. The idea is that this type of network would allow the user greater access to bandwidth than RF technology.
This type of network is also considered to offer a higher level of security as eavesdropping is not possible and considered far more energy efficient, thus reducing the long term impact on our environment.
