Nonlinear Crystals: High Speed Communication
A group of researchers at Southampton University are working with nonlinear crystals in an attempt to develop an all-optical signal-processing devices that will increase high-speed telecommunications. Researchers hope to achieve signal processing at an entirely optical level.
The researchers are very interested in the use of PPLN crystals. PPLN crystals are known for their speed and efficiency. The waveguides are among the most efficient nonlinear optical devices in the market today. The high efficiency levels would allow the devices to operate with much less power.
The effects of nonlinear crystals are that they allow new frequencies to be generated and they also allow optical processes to be viewed. The hopes are that by utilizing quadratic nonlinearities that new devices would be able to process multiple wavelengths at the same time while maintaining the phase information of the signals.
