Long Haul Optical Fibres

Researchers at ICT Research Centre in Australia have developed a system that will allow telephone companies to increase the speed ratings on long haul optical fibres by a multiple of 4 to 40 gigabits per second. The five most common sources of signal impairments in fibre optical cable are caused by:

1. Optical amplifier noise
2. Too much dispersion as the laser beam travels down the fibre
3. A fibre that’s not quite symmetric which leads to more dispersion of the signal
4. Power levels that are too high
5. Interference from adjacent channels and unwanted reflections.

Researchers at ICT believe that the device can be ready for the commercial market within a 12 month time frame.
